Heavy Rains Send Iowa's Precious Soil Downriver
What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, the Midwest was heading into one of the worst droughts in decades. Now much of the region is soggy.
But the biggest loser from this year's heavy rains? The land itself.
The Environmental Working Group, drawing on analysis done by Iowa State University's Iowa Daily Erosion Project, found in a recent report that during one five-day period in May, 50 townships in Iowa lost more than five tons of topsoil per acre.
As EWG puts it: "Those 1.2 million acres of farmland may have lost more precious topsoil in five days than what is tolerable over an entire year." The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service considers an annual rate of topsoil loss of five tons "tolerable," but EWG says "a truly sustainable rate of erosion is far lower."
As Abbie Fentress Swanson reported last week, the lost topsoil contains a huge amount of nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, that are essential for growing crops. Once they enter rivers, lakes and bays, they can trigger algal growth.
Several members of EWG's Iowa-based staff took a road tour of the damage. You can browse photos that they took along the way on an interactive map.
According to EWG, much of the soil loss could be prevented through more aggressive soil conservation practices, including "no-till" planting, grass waterways and terraces. "Every no-till field with properly placed grass waterways showed only nominal signs of erosion," says the report. "Well-protected fields suffered little damage even where poorly protected fields just down or across the road had suffered badly."

Youth homicide rate hits lowest mark in 30 years
ATLANTA (AP) ? The homicide rate for older children and young adults has hit its lowest point in at least three decades, but the decline has been slowing, according to a new government report.
In 2010, the homicide rate for victims ages 10 to 24 was less than half the rate seen in 1993, when there was an explosion in crime tied to crack cocaine.
The report released Thursday echoes earlier findings about a national decline in killings and other crimes, but offers a more focused look at what is one of the most affected groups. Ages 10 to 24 account for about a third of slaying victims. The highest homicide rates are consistently seen in people in their late teens and 20s.
"That's what drives the national numbers. That's the ballgame," said David Hemenway, director of the Harvard University's Injury Control Research Center. He was not involved in the new study.
There are various theories for the drop in youth killings and other crimes since the early 1990s, ranging from the economy to police work or public health campaigns. None completely explain the trend, said Hemenway, a member of a National Academy of Sciences' group examining crime trends.
For the report, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention searched a death statistics database that goes back to 1981.
About 4,800 youths ages 10 to 24 were killed in 2010, the most recent year in the analysis. That translates to a homicide rate of 7.5 per 100,000 people ? the lowest since 1981. It also appears to be lower than rates in the 1970s, a CDC spokeswoman said.
But it hasn't been a steady trend down. The rate dropped a bit in the early 1980s and then rose sharply, peaking at about 16 per 100,000 in 1993. It plummeted for several years before the decline slowed. The rate inched down about 1 percent a year, on average, from 2000 to 2010, the CDC found.
The study showed youth homicide rates fell across the board ? in males, females, whites, blacks and Hispanics. However, males and blacks continued to be killed at far higher rates than females or people in other racial and ethnic groups. The 2010 rate for blacks was nearly four times higher than the average for all youths that age.
The rate of gun-related slayings was about four times higher than of the rate of homicides using other weapons.
Based on overall rates for 2010, homicide last year fell off the nation's top 15 causes of death for the first time in almost half a century. It continues to rank among the top three leading causes of death for people ages 10 to 24, however.

Samsung S4 Lines Up iPhone 5S And Moto X For Price War

The start of the week saw a lot of speculation about the future of the smartphone. Has it peaked/ has it not? Well, maybe but competition is intensifying anyway, particularly on price in the high and mid ranges.
It looks like Google Google will soon put $500 million into launching a new Motorola smartphone against Samsung and Apple products in a market where price reductions and deals will be commonplace.
There are doubts around where Google will pitch the phone with some speculation it will be at $199. That would be a nudge-type product but Motorola cannot be seen as Google?s poodle ? that?s the role of the Nexus. Motorola needs to launch a high end product, even if it intends to chase the lower end of the market later.
Samsung will very likely launch the Note 3 at the same time that the Motorola and new iPhone go on sale. It has begun aggressive pricing of the Galaxy S4 to ensure that it maintains market share in what looks like being a tough summer and Fall. The S4 is now, in many locations, cheaper than a basic iPhone, even though it costs more to produce.
Samsung is using extra margin in its new S4 family, where key component costs are lower, to make a statement about price rather than to claw more profit from its premium smartphones. When the original Galaxy S4 launched in Europe in April Samsung customers paid a premium? of up to Euro 695, or $895 at today?s exchange rate.
Since then the price has come down to about Euro 550 (about $700) and eager customers are expected to pay about the same for the new S4 Active, which is due out soon in Sweden.
In contrast, the iPhone 5 costs ?529 in the UK, nearly $790, for the 16 GB version and ?699 or over $1,000 for the 64 GB version, on the Apple online store (of course you can get it ?free? on contract). The original S4 is now $90 cheaper than the basic iPhone.
In India, where Samsung wants to capture big market share with the S4, the S4 Mini went on sale earlier this week at just $465, the Zoom at $500, according to the Economic Times.The Mini in the UK is priced at a whopping $645.
In India a regular S4 now priced at about $600. Samsung has said it wants the new S4s to make up as much as 20% of its Indian smartphone sales by year end:
?Galaxy S4 has received a phenomenal response since its launch in the Indian market. We are confident that Mini and Zoom will also do well?we expect the S4 range to comprise 15-20 per cent of our smartphone sales (volume) from India by the end of this year,? Samsung director (mobile business) Manu Sharma told PTI.
T Mobile has been selling the S4 for $579 contract free in the US over the past month (Google?s version if $649). The cheapest iPhone 5 is $649 in the Apple store.
Pricing is always compounded by carrier deals but the relative costs of the S4 and iPhone 5, a new phone versus one nearing its anniversary, are instructive.
In the highly price sensitive US market Apple are much closer to Samsung and the S4. In Europe, a tough market right now with buyers sitting on their hands and inventory building up, Samsung has discounted already. And in India it has set the price of its cheaper S4 variants with an eye to gaining market share just as Apple gears up for a cheaper iPhone launch for the fast-developed markets.
Samsung?s pricing is aided by downgrading the chips, cameras and displays in it new S4s. It?s a hidden strategy that could prove very effective in a tight market. The Active has a lower quality display, camera and chip but additional cost in the dust and water proofing and in the more rugged casing. The Mini is a big cost saver and it seems the Zoom is too.
It means that variants of the S4 are priced to compete with whatever Apple comes out with this Fall with the Note 3 flying the flag as the premium phone.
The Note and S4 ranges cover price points from $465 to $800. Google will need its large marketing budget to make an impression in this range.

Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.
You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.
The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.
Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.
You know all those doo-doo-doos and whoa-whoas-whoas you hear in pop hits? Without them, supplied by the likes of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton, you likely wouldn't be singing along to the songs you hear on your car radio.
This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.
It's important to finally put names and faces to the voices of these women because, without them, countless songs would sound horrible.
Neville's greatest strength is as a historian, able to sort through a wealth of details to find the pieces he needs to tell one clear, compelling story.
Salutes songs that wouldn't work without the back-ups and, in effect, turn us all into back-up singers.
Not the deepest documentary you're likely to come across this year -- in fact, it's not deep at all -- but it may well be the most enjoyable one.
The transcendent joy and agonizing heartbreak of making music - and trying to make it in music - have seldom been captured as vividly as in "20 Feet from Stardom."
If music has the power to connect, "Twenty Feet From Stardom" shows it's those backup voices making the connection.
Lovers of classic R&B and rock will never get tired of revisiting this movie and its bonanza of performance footage.
For once, the spotlight shines on these brilliant women who spent most of their careers on the outskirts of fame with minimal fortune to show for their efforts.
Jubilant, informative, and teeming with iconic music, 20 Feet from Stardom is a riveting sit, blasting a spotlight on singers worthy of the intense heat.

20 Feet from Stardom is a thorough--to the point of feeling a bit long--document on the craft.
