Long row to help cancer research in UAE

DUBAI // A man is rowing the equivalent of Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah and back to highlight the need for a UAE bone marrow registry.

Steven Mitchell, from the UK, is 400 kilometres into his 500km Ramadan challenge on an indoor rowing machine. His schedule involves 20, 25km sessions, which he said would take him about 40 hours.

"I'm really suffering from this now, I've got major tendinitis in my left arm and I've got pretty bad back pain," said Mr Mitchell.

Funds raised will go to Cancer Research UK, but he also hopes to raise awareness and support for a bone marrow registry in the UAE.

Mr Mitchell, 33, works in Dubai for finance company Holborn Assets and hopes more donors will come forward before the end of Ramadan.

He has lived in the UAE for five years and recently lost his father-in-law, Hassib, to cancer. He hopes a bone marrow register would lead to better care for sufferers and raise awareness of the disease.

"I've got involved with some meetings before to raise finance for a cancer centre and the person I was speaking to raised some horrific stats about cancer in the UAE," he said.

"The prevalence is relative to most other countries, but the number of diagnoses are below the rest of the world.

By having the facility for a bone marrow registry, you will screen more for the signs of cancer and bring it to the forefront of people's minds.

That will mean they can be screened for different cancers and more people will have a better chance of survival."

Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/Row4Ramadan.

University Of California Approves Major Open Access Policy To Make Research Free

images (44)Good news for fans of the scientific method: the largest and most influential university system on the planet will be giving out its research for free. After 6-year-long fight with the for-profit academic publishing industry, the University of California Senate approved open access standards for research on all 10 campuses. The policy is major win for those who want to see academic research made public, rather than behind the pricy paywalls of big publishers. Last year, Harvard Library penned a memo urging the university’s 2,100 faculty to boycott for-profit academic research databases and instead submit articles to lower-cost open access journals. Universities pay millions for access to their colleague’s research, with subscriptions costs up to $40,000 for a single journal. Publishing, too, can cost many times more for more prestigious closed-access journals. Nature reports that it can cost $5,000 to publish in the biology journal, Cell Reports, but only $1,350 for the most popular open-access journal PLoS ONE. ?It’s still ludicrous how much it costs to publish research,” said molecular biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, Michael Eisen. The open access movement has friends in high-places. Recently, in response to a WeThePeople petition, the White House pledged a whopping $100 million to promote open access and to require all federally-funded research to be free of charge. There are issues with open access; it costs money to curate high-quality peer-review and market the research. Many academic papers take years to write, and its a risky proposition to leave it in the hands of an experimental publisher. But, speaking as a writer who likes to include academic research in my articles, open access could not come soon enough. Media outlets get inundated with research findings, but often can’t get access to the articles to report on them critically. Open access may not be perfect, but it is the future. The more people use it, the better the journals will become. And, ultimately, there will be little need for closed access at all.

Northwestern to pay nearly $3 million to settle cancer research fraud suit

Updated: July 31, 2013 2:20AM

Northwestern University has agreed to pay the federal government nearly $3 million to settle a claim of cancer research fraud against a former doctor at its Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center.

Dr. Charles L. Bennett allegedly took his wife on personal trips, then illegally billed the flights, hotels and meals to the National Institutes of Health, claiming it was part of his cancer-fighting work. And he allegedly submitted phony bills for his work over a seven-year period beginning in 2003.

A whistleblower suit filed under seal in 2009 by former Lurie Cancer Center worker Melissa Theis first alleged the wrongdoing by Bennett. Federal investigators from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, the FBI, the NIH and the U.S. Attorney?s office then probed Theis? allegations.

According to Theis? complaint, her bosses at the highly ranked hospital ?refused to seriously address the issues? when she raised concerns about Bennett in 2008, and Theis left the university soon after.

Under a settlement deal unsealed Tuesday, Northwestern will pay the government $2.93 million, of which Theis will get $498,000.

Northwestern did not admit liability as part of the settlement, but university spokeswoman Marla Paul issued a statement Tuesday saying Northwestern was ?disappointed to see the allegations in the complaint.?

Theis? attorney Linda Wyetzner said it had ?not been easy? for Theis to ?put herself out there as a whistleblower? but that she was happy with the outcome.

Acting U.S. Attorney Gary Shapiro noted that using ?federal grant money to pay for personal travel, hotels and meals, and to hire unqualified friends and relatives as ?consultants? violates the public trust? and warned that anyone who receives federal grants faces punishment if they ?allow the system to be manipulated.?
