Global warming may have severe consequences for rare Haleakal? silverswords

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

While the iconic Haleakal? silversword plant made a strong recovery from early 20th-century threats, it has now entered a period of substantial climate-related decline. New research published this week warns that global warming may have severe consequences for the silversword in its native habitat.

Known for its striking rosette, the silversword grows for 20-90 years before the single reproductive event at the end of its life, at which time it produces a large (up to six feet tall) inflorescence with as many as 600 flower heads. The plant was in jeopardy in the early 1900s due to animals eating the plants and visitors gathering them. With successful management, including legal protection and the physical exclusion of hoofed animals, the species made a strong recovery, but since the mid-1990s it has entered a period of substantial decline. A strong association of annual population growth rates with patterns of precipitation suggests the plants are undergoing increasingly frequent and lethal water stress. Local climate data confirm trends towards warmer and drier conditions on the mountain, which the researchers warn will create a bleak outlook for the threatened silverswords if climate trends continue.

"The silversword example foreshadows trouble for diversity in other biological hotspots," said Dr. Paul Krushelnycky, a biologist with the University of Hawai?i at M?noa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and principal investigator for the project, "and it also illustrates how even well-protected and relatively abundant species may succumb to climate-induced stresses."

"The silversword is an amazing story of selective biological adaptation of this distant cousin of the daisy to the high winds and sometimes freezing temperatures on the high slopes and thin soils of Haleakal? volcano," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "Despite the successful efforts of the National Park Service to protect this very special plant from local disturbance from humans and introduced species, we now fear that these actions alone may be insufficient to secure this plant's future. No part of our planet is immune from the impacts of climate change."

The Haleakal? silversword (Argyroxyphium sandwicense macrocephalum) grows only on a single volcano summit in Hawai?i, yet it is viewed by 1 million visitors annually at Haleakal? National Park. Although the decline and extinction of other rare species with small ranges (and the accompanying loss of biodiversity) can easily go unobserved and unappreciated, the silversword's high profile makes it a good example with which to educate the public about global climate change.

Krushelnycky co-authored the paper along with Lloyd Loope, scientist emeritus with the U.S. Geological Survey, and others at the University of Hawai'i at M?noa, and University of Arizona. They explain that although climate change is predicted to place mountaintop and other narrowly endemic species such as the silversword at severe risk of extinction, the ecological processes involved in such extinctions are still poorly understood, and they are hoping to increase this understanding.

Bat-killing fungus found at Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park

A fungus that has killed roughly 6 million bats in North America and Canada has now been found for the first time in Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park, federal authorities announced Wednesday.

White-nose syndrome, discovered in New York in 2006, has been confirmed in nine national parks and 19 states as far west as Missouri.

"I am incredibly sad to report this," Mammoth Cave National Park Supt. Sarah Craighead said at a news conference. "A northern long-eared bat showing symptoms of white-nose syndrome was found in Long Cave in the park. The bat was euthanized on Jan. 4 and sent for laboratory testing. Those tests confirmed white-nose syndrome."

Long Cave, an undeveloped cave about 1.3 miles long, is not connected to 390-mile long Mammoth Cave, a popular historic site visited by about 400,000 each year.

The park service will continue giving tours of Mammoth Cave, which annually generate about $3.9 million in fees from visitors. To prevent spread of the disease, the parks service screens all visitors before they go on a tour and has them walk across decontamination mats as they exit, Craighead said.

The rapidly spreading fungus, which scientists know as Geomyces destructans, hits hardest among the 25 species of hibernating bats.

The disease "could persist in cave environments for decades even in the absence of bats," said Jeremy Coleman of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. White-nose syndrome, which can be transmitted between animals through direct contact, gets its name from the powdery, white substance that appears around muzzles, ears and wings of affected bats.

Bats with white-nose syndrome exhibit unusual behavior during cold winter months, including flying outside during the day and clustering near the entrances of caves and mines where they hibernate. Bats have been found sick and dying in unprecedented numbers near these hibernacula during a portion of the year when there are no insects to eat.

In November, U.S. Geological Survey scientists and collaborators at the National Institutes of Health hypothesized that bats recovering from white-nose syndrome show evidence of an inflammatory condition first described in HIV-AIDS patients.

If confirmed, the discovery could prove significant for studies on treatment for AIDS, Marcia McNutt, director of the U.S. Geological Survey, said recently.

First-in-Canada technology helps cancer specialists to better detect lung cancer

BC Cancer Foundation donors support major enhancement to lung cancer care

VANCOUVER, Jan. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - Lung cancer specialists at the BC Cancer Agency now have access to a three-dimensional navigation system that can enhance diagnosis, staging and care for lung cancer patients in BC.

The BC Cancer Foundation-funded equipment is the first of its kind to be used in Canada and is newly-installed at the BC Cancer Agency's Vancouver Centre.

"This technology acts as a GPS, providing clear turn-by-turn guidance through the patient's lung, leading us directly to the tumour," says Dr. Stephen Lam, Chair, Provincial Lung Tumour Group, BC Cancer Agency. "This new system will improve the accuracy of bronchoscopy procedures from 30 to 80 per cent for small lesions in the lung that are traditionally very difficult to biopsy."

The technology converts two-dimensional images from a Computerized Tomography (CT scan) into three-dimensional graphics that guide the respirologist through a bronchoscopy procedure, directly to the suspect tumour. The mapping system is particularly beneficial in procedures where the tumour is less than two centimeters and located in the periphery of the lung.

Previously, oncologists would refer to a two-dimensional image highlighting the tumour's location from a patient's CT scan.

With the new three-dimensional images, care providers will also be better equipped to plan for radiation therapy and surgical procedures with specific markers indicating the cancer's location.

BC Cancer Foundation donors provided $600,000 to acquire the new LungPoint system in addition to other state-of-the-art equipment in the newly renovated Endoscopy Suite.

"Lung cancer experts at the BC Cancer Agency identified a new technology that would truly enhance patient care and BC Cancer Foundation donors answered that call ensuring patients continue to receive the best care possible," said Douglas Nelson, President & CEO, BC Cancer Foundation. "Their generosity will directly improve lung cancer detection and diagnosis in BC."

Map provides an update of events in Mali

(AP) ? French forces led an all-night aerial bombing campaign Tuesday to wrest control of a small Malian town from armed Islamist extremists who seized the area, including its strategic military camp.

A a convoy of 40 to 50 trucks carrying French troops crossed into Mali from Ivory Coast as France prepares for a possible land assault. Several thousand soldiers from the nations neighboring Mali are also expected to begin arriving in coming days.

French President Francois Hollande launched an attack on Mali's rebels, who are linked to al-Qaida, last week after the insurgents began advancing south. France's action preempted a United Nations-approved plan for a military operation in Mali, which was expected to start about nine months from now. Hollande decided a military response could not wait that long in its former colony.

French officials have acknowledged that the rebels are better armed and prepared than they expected. Despite France's five-day-old aerial assault, the Islamist fighters have succeeded in gaining ground, most notably taking Diabaly on Monday, putting them roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Mali's capital, Bamako. When the air raids began last week, the closest known point they occupied was 680 kilometers (420 miles) from the capital.

"They bombed Diabaly. They bombed the town all night long. I am hiding inside a house," said Ibrahim Toure, who irons clothes for a living and happened to be passing through Diabaly on his way to visit relatives, getting caught when the Islamists encircled the town. "It only stopped this morning at around 6 a.m."

France ordered the evacuation of the roughly 60 French citizens living in the area of Segou, the administrative capital of central Mali located a three-hour drive from Diabaly, according to an email sent by the French Embassy in Bamako.

During a stop in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Hollande told RFI radio that he was sure the French military operation would succeed.

"We are confident about the speed with which we will be able to stop the aggressors, the enemy, these terrorists. And with (the help) of the Africans that are being deployed, I think that in one more week we can restore Mali's territorial integrity," he said. "Airstrikes were conducted overnight so that the terrorists who are seeking refuge in Diabaly ? they have not conquered the town and are hiding inside it to protect themselves ? will be chased out."

The Islamists taunted the French, saying that they have vastly exaggerated their gains.

"I would advise France not to sing their victory song too quickly. They managed to leave Afghanistan. They will never leave Mali," said Oumar Ould Hamaha, a commander of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the extremist groups controlling northern Mali, whose fighters are believed to be in Diabaly.

"It's to our advantage that they send in French troops on foot," Hamaha said. "We are waiting for them. And what they should know is that every French soldier that comes into our territory should make sure to prepare his will beforehand, because he will not leave alive."

Diabaly represents an especially symbolic victory for the Islamists. It was in the military camp inside the town that 16 Muslim preachers from the fundamentalist Islamic sect, the Dawa which originated in India, were massacred by Malian government forces four months ago. The group of bearded men were unarmed, and were heading to a religious conference in the capital. Many of the leaders of the extremist groups occupying northern Mali began their path to jihad by adhering to the Dawa interpretation of Islam, which calls on the faithful to act as missionaries. One such missionary was Hamaha, who traveled to France a decade ago in order to preach the austere version of Islam in mosques.

It is unclear what happened to the Malian soldiers based at the Diabaly camp. Hamaha told the AP that many are dead, and that others fled on foot. A member of the Malian security force based in Bamako, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said that an unknown number of soldiers were killed. A group of them escaped, fleeing north to the next small town, Dogofri. The man insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Two residents of the town of Sikasso, located on the Mali border with Ivory Coast, said the population came out to cheer the French military convoy, traveling from a base in Ivory Coast. It was unclear if they were headed to Diabaly or elsewhere.

Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed Tuesday that their RAF C17 aircraft carrying French military personnel and supplies had arrived in the capital, Bamako.

There are already at least 800 French troops in Mali, with more arriving every day. A total of 13 nations have agreed to either send troops, or else supplies and logistical help to aid the effort in Mali.

The al-Qaida-linked groups control an area that is the size of France itself in northern Mali, a territory larger than even Afghanistan. They seized it in conjunction with other rebel groups nine months ago, and have imposed a brutal version of Islam. Girls as young as 12 have been flogged for not covering up, as have pregnant and elderly women. The rich musical tradition of this part of the world has gone silent in the north, where even cellphone ringtones are banned.

Among the first targets of the French bombing raid was a building in the city of Gao that served as the headquarters of the Islamic police, which handed down punishments that included the amputation of the hands and feet of accused thieves.

Warners Orders Rewrite on Reddit-Inspired Screenplay

Brian Miller

Miller

Warner Bros. has tapped "Apollo 18" scribe Brian Miller to take a crack at "Rome, Sweet Rome," a high-concept time travel story that originated from the website Reddit.com.In October 2011, Warners preemptively purchased the "Rome, Sweet Rome" pitch from first-time scribe James Erwin, an author and two-time "Jeopardy!" champion from Des Moines, Iowa. Erwin's pitch sale sprang from several postings on Reddit, an online community and social news aggregator where he set out to answer the question: "What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions?"Madhouse Entertainment's Adam Kolbrenner spotted Erwin's "Rome, Sweet Rome" posts once they were voted to the Reddit home page and moved quickly to contact the writer and begin working with him to develop the concept. When it came time to find a home for the project, Kolbrenner brought it to WB exec Chris Gary, who encouraged the studio to move aggressively to acquire it.Erwin ended up writing a draft of the screenplay, but the studio felt it needed a fresh approach -- which is where Miller, who never saw Erwin's draft, comes in. Latest logline only slightly tweaks the original, however, pitting "U.S. Special Forces," as opposed to Marines, against Roman warriors.Kolbrenner and Madhouse will produce with Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang and Safe House Pictures duo Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold, the latter of whom was instrumental in coming up with how the concept can work for WB. Madhouse's Robyn Meisinger will exec produce.Miller's "Apollo 18," a low-budget, star-free, found-footage sci-fi pic, grossed a surprising $17 million Stateside for The Weinstein Co in 2011. In addition to "Rome, Sweet Rome," Miller has also been working with "American Horror Story" co-creator Ryan Murphy on an untitled sci-fi/horror movie for Sony Pictures and producer John Palermo ("Drive"), as well as an untitled sci-fi thriller for Paramount and producer Brad Weston. Miller is repped by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

Cancer suppressor gene links metabolism with cellular aging

Monday, January 14, 2013

It is perhaps impossible to overstate the importance of the tumor suppressor gene p53. It is the single most frequently mutated gene in human tumors. p53 keeps pre-cancerous cells in check by causing cells, among other things, to become senescent ? aging at the cellular level. Loss of p53 causes cells to ignore the cellular signals that would normally make mutant or damaged cells die or stop growing.

In short, the p53 pathway is an obvious and attractive target for drug developers. But that strategy has so far proven difficult, as most p53 regulatory proteins operate via protein-protein interactions, which make for poor drug targets, as opposed to ones based on enzymes.

Now, a team of researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, has identified a class of p53 target genes and regulatory molecules that represent more promising therapeutic candidates.

As Xiaolu Yang, PhD, professor of Cancer Biology and investigator in Penn's Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, and his team describe in an advance online Nature publication, p53 participates in a molecular feedback circuit with malic enzymes, thereby showing that p53 activity is also involved in regulating metabolism.(The Yang lab identified p53's role in glucose metabolism in the past.)

The new findings, Yang says, suggest that p53 acts as a molecular sensor of metabolic stress and explains how metabolic stress can lead to senescence in cells.

"We uncovered an important regulatory mechanism for p53 as well as an effector mechanism for p53," Yang says.

Significantly, the findings also identify malic enzymes as novel and potentially useful pharmaceutical targets for anticancer therapy, as well as possible mediators of the normal aging process ? though neither possibility was actually addressed in the current study.

As cells become damaged and precancerous, the p53 protein prevents those cells from continuing towards becoming tumors by causing the cells to senesce. Metabolic cues also regulate senescence, but the molecular relays coupling those two processes -- senescence and metabolism -- remained unknown.

Yang and his team decided to test if a pair of enzymes, malic enzyme 1 and malic enzyme 2 (ME1 and ME2), could be involved. Malic enzymes recycle malate ? an intermediate molecule ? back into an end-product of glycolysis ? pyruvate ? storing energy in the process. Malic enzymes are important for adjusting metabolic flux to suit proliferating cells' demands for energy and biosynthesis. Thus, these two enzymes are attuned to the energy and proliferative state of the cell.

Yang's team found that p53 inhibits malic enzyme expression, such that loss of p53 causes malic enzyme abundance to increase. Conversely, malic enzymes keep p53 in check; loss of malic enzymes ramps up p53 activation and induces senescence via either downregulation of a p53 inhibitor (Mdm2) or production of oxygen radicals. Overexpression of malic enzymes inhibits senescence.

The result, Yang explains, is a "feed-forward loop" in which activation of p53 suppresses malic enzyme expression, reducing malic enzyme levels and further upregulating p53, leading to senescence. On the other hand, upregulation of malic enzymes inhibits p53. p53 inhibition loosens the protein's grip on malic enzyme expression, allowing malic enzyme levels to rise.

"This is a circuit," he says. "Going around this loop, you get pretty robust activation."

These same results played out in animal models described in the Nature study. Loss of either ME1 or ME2 reduced tumor weight, even with p53-null tumor cells, which suggests an additional, p53-independent function of malic enzymes. And, overexpression of malic enzymes led to more substantial tumors.

According to Yang, the study pegs malic enzymes as molecular players linking senescence and metabolic state. Those enzymes could potentially serve as anticancer drug targets, he says. But equally important, they may also play a role in the normal process of cellular aging.

"Senescence is aging at the cellular level," says Yang, who notes that considerable research has demonstrated a correlation between caloric restriction and lifespan. "We may have identified a good starting point to understand how aging works."

HTC One SV review

One SV

As Cricket's latest LTE-enabled phone, the HTC One SV brings quality construction in a outstanding mid-range package

It's tough to review a phone that doesn't stand out from the crowd. On the other hand, when the crowd is made up of great phones from HTC like the Droid DNA, One X+ and One S, it's not really a bad thing. That's what you have here with the HTC One SV -- a great little phone that blends in well with the rest of HTC's current offerings.

Here in the states, the One SV is exclusive to Cricket. While that's good news for Cricket customers, it means that this one probably won't get the exposure that it would if it were on a bigger carrier. It's also a chance for HTC to cut corners on the budget phone they built for the budget carrier. Thankfully, they didn't.

After using it for a bit, I'm left with the impression that the One SV is a better built One S -- and that's no easy feat. You can tell that plenty of time and money went into the design, and rather than skimp on features to make a new mid-range device HTC has built it from the ground up to offer a great package with slightly more inexpensive internals. It's a method that works well. See how well after the break.

Syria bombs Damascus suburbs to keep rebels out

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government bombed areas around Damascus on Monday as part of its push to keep rebel fighters out of the capital, leaving many children among the dozens killed, anti-regime activists said.

An international aid organization cited such raids, along with rape and widespread destruction, as key factors in the exodus of more than a half-million Syrians to neighboring countries since the conflict began in March 2011.

The International Rescue Committee said it could be "months, if not years" before the refugees can return home and warned that Syria's civil war could enflame tensions in the Middle East.

After nearly two years of violence, it appears unlikely that the war will end soon. Although rebels seeking to oust President Bashar Assad have made gains in the country's north and east and outside of Damascus, they have yet to seriously challenge his hold on the capital or other parts of the country.

Earlier this month, Assad dismissed calls from the U.S. and others that he step down and vowed to keep fighting until the country is free of "terrorists" ? his government's shorthand for rebels.

International diplomacy has done little to bridge the gap.

In a report released Monday, the International Rescue Committee painted a grim picture of what life has become for Syrians in war-torn areas.

Syrians face brutal killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, frequent airstrikes, sexual violence and diminishing medical services, the report said.

The 32-page report, based on interviews with Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq in November 2012, said that many who fled the country cited rape as a primary reason.

"Many women and girls relayed accounts of being attacked in public or in their homes, primarily by armed men," the report said. "These rapes, sometimes by multiple perpetrators, often occur in front of family members."

The group did not say if the alleged perpetrators were rebels or government forces.

Anti-regime activists have reported rapes by government soldiers or pro-government thugs, and U.N. war crimes investigators reported in August that government forces and allied militias were responsible for murders, rapes and indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

The report warned that violence could keep Syria's refugees in neighboring countries for years, taxing the resources of host governments and enflaming domestic tensions, particularly in Jordan and Lebanon. It called for greater international aid in and outside of Syria as well as open borders to allow those threatened by violence to escape.

Violence continued inside Syria on Monday, as government fighter jets carried out lethal airstrikes on rebellious areas near the capital, Damascus.

One strike hit the suburb of Moadamiyeh, blasting the walls off apartment blocks and scattering rubble in the streets. Activist videos posted online showed residents searching for survivors and wrapping dead bodies in blankets. One video showed two corpses lying face down, one covered in gray cement dust. Another showed the bodies of six children laid out on a floor. The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other Associated Press reporting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 13 people were killed in the Moadamiyeh blast, eight children and five women. The group, which relies on contacts in Syria, also reported deadly airstrikes in two other suburbs, saying at least 45 people were killed in and around the capital Monday, including 10 rebel fighters.

The Syrian government offered its own account of the blast in Moadamiyeh, saying "terrorists" fired a shell at the neighborhood, hitting a residential building and causing an undefined number of casualties.

The destruction in the videos, however, appeared consistent with an airstrike, not a shell attack.

Rebel fighters said the strike on Moadamiyeh came amid a government offensive to push rebel fighters from there and the adjacent southwest suburb of Daraya.

Rebels moved into the two suburbs weeks ago, but have been bogged down in clashes with government troops since then. Both areas put rebel forces within striking distance of a key military airport in the Mezzeh neighborhood.

The Observatory said Monday that the government had blown up homes between the airport and the neighborhoods to establish a buffer zone.

One fighter in the area reached Monday said the government appeared set on pushing the rebels out.

"The noise from the bombardment is astounding today," said the fighter, who gave only his first name, Iyad, for security reasons. "The regime is using all kinds of weaponry."

The U.N. says that more than 60,000 people have been killed since Syria's crisis began with anti-regime protests. The conflict has since descended into civil war, with rebel brigades across the country fighting Assad's forces.

International diplomacy has failed to end the conflict.

On Monday, the secretary general of NATO said the alliance had no plans to intervene in Syria, warning that foreign intervention could have "unpredictable regional repercussions."

Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a defense conference in Sweden that Syria is more politically, religiously and ethnically complex than Libya, where NATO airstrikes in 2011 helped rebels overthrow Moammar Gadhafi.

Still, NATO is deploying Patriot missiles along Turkey's southern border with Syria to help the alliance member guard against spillover from the war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday reiterated his criticism of Western calls that Assad step down.

During a visit to Ukraine, Lavrov suggested that Assad's opponents propose their own solution to the conflict.

Syria's splintered opposition has never offered a unified view on how to end the conflict or what should follow, other than agreeing on Assad's ouster.

"If I were in the opposition's place, I would put forth my own ideas in response on how to establish a dialogue," Lavrov said.

Iyad, the fighter near Damascus, said the opposition's key demand hasn't changed.

"We have said a million times we will accept nothing less than Assad's resignation," he said.

December home prices jump 19.6% in Southern California

Southern California?s housing market ended last year with sharp home-price gains and the highest sales for a December in three years.

Southern California's housing market ended the year with sharp gains, rounding out the first solid year of sustained improvement after nearly five years of real estate malaise ? and helping set up further improvement in 2013.

The region's median home price registered a sizable 19.6% pop in December compared with the same month last year to hit $323,000, real estate firm DataQuick reported Tuesday. A record level of cash buyers flooded into the market and more move-up homes sold last month.

While Southland housing is on the mend, the steep increase in the region's median price last month probably reflects a variety of factors, such as the mix of what sold in December, and the run-up may not continue at that brisk pace, experts said. The median is the point at which half the homes in the region sold for more and half for less.

"There is no possible way that number can be sustained nor should anybody look at that as a long-term trend," said Stuart Gabriel, director of the Ziman Center for Real Estate at UCLA. "We haven't shifted from bust back to bubble, and nobody should think we have, and nor likely will we."

When compared with the prior month, the median was essentially flat, up only 0.6%. San Bernardino and Riverside counties posted the strongest year-over-year increases, up 20.0% and 19.1%, respectively, indicating that the once hard-hit Inland Empire is now probably in recovery.

The median is heavily influenced by the types of homes selling, and some of last month's pricier sales may have been driven by fears of increased tax burdens on the wealthy, as Washington wrangled with the "fiscal cliff" negotiations.

A rise in prices will mean more homeowners who had been underwater ? owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, a condition also known as negative equity ? can now put their properties on the market. That would help ease the region's inventory squeeze, which is another major factor driving up prices.

Last year was the first year of solid improvement since housing crashed in 2007. The strong performance last month indicates that 2013 will continue to bring home price gains, analysts said.

"Our forecast over the next 12 months is for equally strong appreciation," Zillow.com chief economist Stan Humphries said. "Even though we have got a lot of homes still in negative equity in Southern California, the tight inventory is definitely creating some price appreciation."

An estimated total of 20,274 new and previously owned homes and condominiums sold throughout the six-county region in December. That was a 5.1% increase from November and up 5.3% from December 2011. Last month's tally was the highest for a December since 2009.

The 2012 housing rebound came after foreclosures declined, housing inventory plummeted, mortgage interest rates hit record lows and demand from investors surged last year.

In addition, the overhang of the last housing bust resulted in some unexpected benefits.

For instance, the high number of underwater borrowers actually served as a boost to the market rather than being a drag, as people kept their homes off the market, decreasing inventory.

"The lock-out phenomenon, combined with the rise in investors converting foreclosures into rentals, led to a lack of for-sale inventory," CoreLogic economist Sam Khater wrote in a research note. "With home prices rising in 2012 and 2013, tight for-sale inventory will begin to ease."

Nationally, CoreLogic reported that home prices were on a sharp upward trajectory in November, with almost all states posting gains that month. The firm's home price index report, also released Tuesday, showed that home prices nationwide increased 7.4% year-over-year.

"Consistent price increases throughout 2012 have started the process of lifting households out of negative equity, which will support home sales and refinancing volumes," Paul Diggle, an economist for Capital Economics, wrote in an emailed analysis. "Lower levels of negative equity is good news for housing market activity and sets up a virtuous circle of rising activity leading to rising prices and pushing negative equity down further."

In California, buyers can anticipate a tight market in the near term. A supply of only about 2 1/2 months' worth of single-family homes for sale was available statewide at the end of December, the California Assn. of Realtors reported Tuesday. A supply of six or seven months is considered healthy by most economists.

Supply from distressed sales, particularly from foreclosed homes, will remain limited as those homes are being quickly snapped up by investors while the number of troubled borrowers entering foreclosure continues to decline. The number of notices of default ? the first step in the formal foreclosure process ? fell 14.5% in December from November and dropped 39.8% from December 2011, according to foreclosure tracker ForeclosureRadar.com.

The decline in foreclosures has been aided by an increase in short sales, as The Times recently reported, as well as other loan aid for borrowers. The drop in foreclosures should continue to help lift prices.

"For 2013, we largely expect more of the same," Sean O'Toole, chief executive of ForeclosureRadar, wrote in a blog post this week. "Demand will remain strong thanks to Federal Reserve-manipulated low interest rates and affordability. Housing supply will remain constrained, largely due to government foreclosure intervention. As a result, prices will rise, though likely at a slower pace."

The increase in the median home price in Southern California reflects market dynamics as fewer sales are logged in cheaper neighborhoods and pricier places take off.

Throughout Southern California, sales of mid-to-higher-cost markets rose in December, DataQuick reported. Sales of homes between $300,000 and $800,000, the typical move-up range, jumped 31.4% year-over-year. Sales of homes above $500,000 soared 40.0% year-over-year, while sales of homes of more than $800,000 were up 36.3%.

Meanwhile, cheaper neighborhoods posted weak sales. Most notably, the number of homes throughout the region that sold below $200,000 dropped 28.1% while those below $300,000 fell 18.2%.

Sales of foreclosed homes made up just 14.8% of the market last month, down from 15.4% the month before and 32.4% in December 2011. That compares with a high of 56.7% of the market in February 2009.

Cash buyers and investors are playing a big part in snapping up home inventory. Cash buyers bought up 33.8% of all resale homes last month, while absentee buyers purchased 29.1% of Southland homes in December, DataQuick said.

'Jurassic Park 4' gets a release date

Universal revealed the release date for the fourth film in the 'Jurassic Park' series.

After years of rumor and speculation about a fourth film, fans of the Jurassic Park franchise understandably wondered if the dinosaur saga was?truly extinct. However,?Jurassic?Park 4?finally got some legs when Steven Spielberg?met with writer?Mark Protosevich to go over story ideas?a couple of years back, and the project really started to take off when the studio hired the?husband-wife writing team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to pen the screenplay?about six months ago.

Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Since then, the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with sometimes controversial movie reviews. The goal at Screen Rant is to cover stories and review movies from a middle ground/average person perspective.

Producer Frank Marshall revealed some details about the long-awaited fourth film a few months back and said that it ?will be on the big screen within two years.? Well, now we can officially say he wasn?t kidding, as Universal finally announced the film will release on June 13, 2014.

According to The Wrap, the studio made the highly-anticipated announcement Friday and added that the film plans to shoot and release in 3D. Of course, fans of the franchise will get a tasty sample of that experience when the acclaimed Jurassic Park is re-released in 3D?on April 5, 2013.

Although the project has a script in development and an official release date, it has yet to attach a director. Spielberg, who directed the incredible original adaptation of Michael Crichton?s novel and the not-as-great sequel, was the first and most obvious choice. However, as we learned about a year ago, he is not up for directing?JP4 and was instead working intently on 2013?Best Picture nominee Lincoln?which he is also nominated for Best Director? and the sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse, which was?recently put on hold. However, he will serve as a producer along with Marshall.

Jurassic Park 3 director Joe Johnston was also being discussed to take over directorial duties for the fourth film, and although nothing has been confirmed on that front, he did reveal that the newest incarnation would take the franchise in an entirely different direction. The film will obviously have to touch on the history of the previous three, but it will almost assuredly involve brand new characters and and a new story.

With no director and no cast members on board at the moment, there is plenty of uncertainty as to how exactly the film will come together, but we can safely assume that Universal will put a sizeable investment into JP4 and considering the advancements in effects technology since the third film, the visual aesthetics on the fourth will certainly be vastly improved?not to mention that it will be in 3D!

So, it?s finally happening. Mark your calendars and set a date to check out Jurassic Park 4 when it hits theatres on June 13, 2014.

The HSUS Releases Annual Ranking of State Animal Protection Laws

January?15,?2013

California retains first place; South Dakota holds last

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation?s largest animal protection organization, has released its fourth annual ?Humane State Ranking? report, a comprehensive analysis of animal protection laws in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The HSUS graded states on the strength of a wide range of animal protection laws, including public policies dealing with animal cruelty and fighting, pets, wildlife, equines, animals in research, and farm animals.

California earned first place for the fourth year in a row, while South Dakota remained in last place. Ohio was the most improved state, leaping ahead in the ranks by passing laws regulating puppy mills and the private possession of dangerous wild animals. To see the complete 2012 Humane State Rankings, click here.

?Members of The Humane Society of the United States want to know what their state lawmakers are doing to improve animal welfare. Our Humane State Ranking report demonstrates which states are falling behind important protections for animals, and which states are leading in the effort to create a more humane and civil society,? said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. ?Ohio made great progress, but the Dakotas are lagging badly and are clearly out of step with so much of the rest of the country when it comes to animal welfare policies. Animal protection matters to Americans, and our laws must line up with our values.?

California stayed on top for the fourth year in a row by passing a number of new laws, including a law banning the hound hunting of bears and bobcats. Other top states are Massachusetts (tied for second place) for passing a law allowing pets to be included in domestic violence protection orders, and banning gas chambers for euthanasia; Illinois (tied for second place) for passing a ban on shark fin products; Oregon (fourth place); New Jersey (tied for fifth place) for passing a horse slaughter ban; and Maine (tied for fifth place).

South Dakota earned the lowest score (51st place). Other states near the bottom include Idaho (50th place), Mississippi (49th place), North Dakota (48th place) and South Carolina (47th place).

South Dakota and North Dakota received especially low marks in part because they are the only two states in the country with no felony-level penalties for malicious acts of animal cruelty. North Dakota could have pulled ahead this year, but voters rejected a ballot measure to increase penalties for egregious acts of animal cruelty on the November 2012 ballot, keeping the state squarely at the bottom of the list.

In 2012, The HSUS helped pass 74 new laws and regulations to protect animals and helped to defeat more than 100 harmful measures.

The ranking was based on 75 different animal protection issues in 10 major animal protection categories including: animal fighting; animal cruelty; wildlife abuse; exotic pets; companion animals; use of animals in research; farm animals; fur and trapping; puppy mills, and equine protection.

India's army chief turns up heat on Pakistan, says can retaliate

By Sanjeev MiglaniPosted 2013/01/14 at 3:01 am EST

NEW DELHI, Jan. 14, 2013 (Reuters) ? India's army chief accused Pakistan on Monday of detailed planning of an attack along Kashmir's de factor border last week in which two soldiers were killed and said India reserved the right to retaliate.

An Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier patrols near the fenced border with Pakistan in Suchetgarh, southwest of Jammu January 11, 2013. REUTERS/Mukesh Gupta

The comments, which came as public anger mounts over the decapitation of one of the slain soldiers, appear certain to further inflame tensions between the nuclear-armed enemies.

Last week's fighting was the worst outbreak of violence in Kashmir, the Himalayan region both nations claim, since the two sides agreed a ceasefire nine years ago. Indian and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence in 1947, two of them over Kashmir.

Army chief General Bikram Singh was speaking just hours before local commanders were to meet at the border to identify ways of reducing tensions and avoiding further clashes.

"The attack on January 8 was premeditated, a pre-planned activity. Such an operation requires planning, detailed reconnaissance," Singh told a news conference in New Delhi.

He said India reserved the right to retaliate against provocative acts on the border at a time and place of its choosing.

"I expect all my commanders at the Line of Control to be both aggressive and offensive in the face of provocation and fire," he said.

Both armies have lost two soldiers each in fighting along parts of the 740-km (460-mile) ceasefire line this month. One of the Indians was decapitated, New Delhi said, inflaming tempers in the country and prompting his family to start a hunger strike demanding that the severed head be brought back.

Pakistan has termed the Indian allegations as propaganda and blamed it for violations on the ceasefire line.

Islamabad accused Indian soldiers of entering its territory and killing a soldier on Jan 6. India said Pakistani soldiers intruded about 600 meters (yards) into its territory two days later and killed two Indian soldiers on patrol, the attack Singh was referring to.

Pakistan said one of its soldiers was killed in further fighting on Thursday.

Singh said the beheading was a "gruesome act" and against the ethics of soldiering. He said a strong protest had been lodged with Pakistani authorities through diplomatic channels.

The family members of the slain soldier, Hemraj Singh, have launched a hunger strike demanding retribution and that his severed head be back brought back.

"Our demand is not something big. My brother's head should be brought back and the Pakistanis should be taught a lesson," said Jai Singh in their village in northern India.

Venezuelans wonder how long they can go without a president

Huddled in a doorway outside the pink and red presidential palace, Alexis Le?n said he has faith that its tenant, ailing President Hugo Ch?vez, will be home soon.

Government officials insist that Ch?vez is alert and speaking to his family as he recovers from cancer surgery in Cuba. But in Caracas ? where he hasn?t been seen or heard from in more than a month ? there?s little to do but worry and wait.

?If he was my family member, I would also keep him from making any public appearances until he was completely recovered ? anything for his health,? said Le?n, 51, a theater professor. ?He?ll be back; we just have to give him time.?

But many wonder how long Latin America?s fourth-largest economy can function with its leader in absentia and incommunicado.

On Monday, the coalition of opposition parties, known by its Spanish acronym MUD, released letters sent to the Organization of American States and the Mercosur trade group asking them to weigh in on what they see as a violation of the constitution that could ?affect the stability of the region.? The coalition also asked to make its case before the permanent council of the OAS.

Despite Ch?vez?s frail health, the Supreme Court insists he is still in charge. That means that Vice President Nicol?s Maduro does not have the power to appoint ambassadors or cabinet members or sign international treaties, legal experts said.

?How long do we have to wait for the president?? asked Miriam Berdugo de Montilla, an opposition lawmaker. ?Who can tell us where the president is? What condition is he in? Where are they keeping him? Nobody really knows.?

The government says Ch?vez is in Havana being treated by an international team of experts for an undisclosed form of cancer that he?s been battling since at least June 2011. On Sunday, officials said he was alert and reacting ?favorably? to treatment for a severe respiratory infection that has plagued his recovery.

But there are reasons for concern. Last week, Ch?vez purportedly sent a letter to congress asking for permission to miss his Jan. 10 inauguration. But the letter was signed by Maduro, not the president. And when tens of thousands of Ch?vez followers crammed downtown Caracas to mark his new six-year term, there were no recorded messages from Havana, as many were hoping.

?Imagine President Barack Obama not being touch, not even a picture or proof of life for 35 days,? Russ Dallen, a Caracas-based investor and journalist told a panel in Washington, D.C. on Monday. ?It?s an amazing, amazing scenario.?

To complicate matters, the Supreme Court has turned down requests to send a medical team to Havana, and no doctors or independent observers have commented on his status. When a Brazilian diplomat visited earlier this month he called the president?s condition ?grave,? but provided no details. Argentina?s Cristina Fern?ndez de Kirchner and Bolivia?s Evo Morales have also been recent visitors, but have remained mum about his condition.

The fact that the only people talking about the president?s health have a vested interest is suspicious, said Nelson Madrid, a 59-year-old music teacher who has lost confidence in the government reports.

New warehouse to help St. Petersburg church feed the hungry

By ANASTASIA DAWSON | Tribune staff

Members of Pinellas Community Church and St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster gathered around a warehouse in the church parking lot Sunday afternoon ? posing for pictures, taking videos with cellphones and thanking God for the church's good fortune.

The building is empty for now, but represents the progress the church has made in a 10-month campaign to feed the hungry in the south St. Petersburg area. Through the church's FEED St. Pete campaign, volunteers have provided food to more than 7,000 people, one-third of whom are children.

Since the church of about 600 members began collecting food in March, the program has grown from a 75-square-foot pantry to the new 2,000-square-foot warehouse ? an $80,000 building paid for completely from donations.

"Right now we have so much food that we've been keeping it in our preschool Sunday school rooms and cranking the air down overnight," said Pastor Mark Canfield. "We want to touch people's hearts, and I think part of that is not just sharing with them in their material needs, but showing compassion for the other needs in their life. ? This is literally about keeping people alive."

From 5 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday, anywhere from 20 to 45 volunteers serve meals to about 100 people, making this pantry the largest one in the south St. Petersburg area, Mayor Foster said. The "clients" usually show up at the church around noon to get a ticket for the 5 p.m. meal and provide some documentation of the number of people in their family. As they eat their meal, clients also select food to take home with them for the week and talk with church counselors about any issues weighing on their minds.

Canfield said the church can feed a family of four for a week at a cost of only $10. The church is partnered with Feeding America, a national charity that allows them to purchase food for pennies on the dollar and also provides free donations whenever available.

In addition to collecting donations at the church, volunteers often spend the week driving between Feeding America food warehouses in Clearwater and Tampa and the St. Petersburg Free Clinic to collect everything from fresh produce to diapers. But church member Pat Payne said the hours spent volunteering have already allowed her to witness miracles.

"We've had big events with Feeding America where people have lined up around the building for food, and the last one we almost ran short," Payne said. "But by the end I started crying because we found another crate of food in one of the trucks. They had cut off the cars because they thought we were out of food, but then we were able to feed the rest of the line, which had poured out into the street."

The warehouse was built to be expanded upon as the program grows, Canfield said, and estimated that there are more than 150,000 in need of a constant food source in the St. Petersburg area.

While it's been easy for the city to address the chronic homeless, the hungry are harder to identify said Foster, who donned a bright yellow FEED St. Pete T-shirt as he led the church in prayer during the Sunday service.

"Not everybody who is hungry is homeless. They live in their homes and they're struggling to make ends meet and they look just like us," Foster said to the congregation. "It's hard to talk to somebody about the love of God when their stomach is rumbling."
