Samsung to ship refreshed Galaxy S II as Plus version

Jelly Bean smartphone has half internal storage of original

Samsung has revealed a new version of its Galaxy S II, which makes a few changes to the handset's design and specifications. The previously-rumored Galaxy S II Plus retains the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen and 1.2GHz dual-core processor, but also adds in a small number of features found on others in the Galaxy range, including the nature-inspired user interface found in the Galaxy S III.

The 8-megapixel rear camera is retained, as well as the 2-megapixel front-facing counterpart and the 1GB of RAM. Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 connectivity, Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5GHz bands, Wi-Fi Direct and optional NFC also makes the cut, though the 16GB of storage in the original has been cut to just 8GB, with an option to expand it to 64GB via microSD.

Jelly Bean will be added to the handset, which will see the smartphone also receive software based extras such as Popup Video, Voice Unlock, S Voice, and Smart Stay. These same features will also arrive on the Galaxy S II in the future, though that will be Android 4.1 and not Android 4.1.2 that the Plus version will have pre-installed.

Samsung did not reveal a release date or price for the Galaxy S II Plus, but given its similar specifications and lower-than-original storage, it is likely to cost around $400 as an unlocked mobile phone. More details are likely to emerge at Mobile World Congress in February.
